Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can put a stop to flying baseballs and others can weather hurricane-force winds. How?

In regard to hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are thoroughly tested for impact resistance.

Tests include shooting a two-by-four at the window to ensure glass stays intact. We use our hurricane cannon to launch the wood, which covers 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We figured, if we could design a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could come up with a fix that could stop home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was contacted to help equip a historic building by Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s exactly what we did.

We overhauled our hurricane cannon to evaluate the home run-resistant windows. We shot baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would recreate the power of a home run.

Our tempered glass resisted the baseballs best because it’s tougher and safer than commonly used annealed glass.

All About Physics

It requires a speed of more than 100 mph and a height greater than 100 feet to send a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s case, we learned the baseballs would be moving at about 60 mph upon striking windows.

But we went above and beyond and checked impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not thinking about an MLB home run propelling toward your windows, there are a lot of reasons to select tough, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s good for homeowners who want an added level of security from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are developing the next great baseball player.

Review the strengths and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Strong glass similar to what is used in car windows.
  • Used where damages from broken glass are a concern.
  • Normally fragments into small, square pieces as opposed to sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t come apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To find out more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of Overland Park at 913-246-5101. Or, request a free, in-home consultation online.
