The Hail Restoration 3-Step Process

If you own a home in the Kansas City area, you understand that the summer season is also hail season. We’ve had a few of our most damaging hailstorms here in the Kansas City metro during the 2016 and 2017 summers.

What many homeowners don’t realize is that oftentimes roofing and siding companies don’t search for hail damage to windows and doors and that homeowners can have their home evaluated for this at no cost.

If you’re wondering if you have hail damage or are in an area that has had a hailstorm pass through, reach out to Pella Windows and Doors of Kansas City for a no cost inspection before problems begin.

Hail damage

Here’s the three-step process and what you have to know about homeowners insurance and hail damage to windows and doors.

Step 1. Request an inspection

If you live in an area that survived hailstorms in the last few years, always examine your home for hail damage to windows and doors. It’s usually left unseen.

How does hail hurt windows and doors?

The most apparent sign is a broken pane, but if hail has created any leaks in your window parts—like sashes, frames or grills—that could lead to drafts, fogging, material deterioration and increasing electricity bills.

What if I don’t see any hail damage or already had my home inspected for hail damage?

Even if you don’t suspect you have had hail damage, we recommend having it checked. It can sometimes be nearly impossible to spot hail damage, so it is better to have a trained professional check just to be sure. We will plan a convenient time to do a hail inspection at no cost to you.

What if insurance already covered hail damage to my roof and siding?

Hail damage to windows and doors can be just as vital to mend as damage to roof and siding and are probably covered by most home insurance policies. There can be time limits on filing new hail damage claims though, so don’t procrastinate.

What if I already had my home checked for hail damage?

Windows and doors are very different from roofs and siding. Most roof and siding companies do not install, service or quote windows and doors, particularly for hail damage.

With windows and doors, call your window and door company.

What if I don’t have Pella windows or doors installed in my home?

It’s not necessary to have Pella windows or doors installed in your home to have a no cost inspection. We will check a home no matter who installed your windows and doors. With a entire line of doors and windows, from fiberglass and vinyl to wood and custom work, Pella services any type of home.

How do I better plan to file an insurance claim for hail damage to windows and doors?

If Pella Windows and Doors does find hail damage, we will give you documentation that is vital in the process of filing insurance. We’ll also work with you and the adjuster who will inspect your home.

The steps of filing an insurance claim and having your windows or doors fixed after hail damage may seem daunting or overwhelming, but that is why Pella Windows and Doors is here to help. We will do the difficult “window and door” parts so you don’t have to tackle that paperwork with your insurance company.

Step 2: File an insurance claim

If it is uncovered that you have hail damage to your windows or doors, the next step will be to file an insurance claim. We can guide you through this process, but the initial claim will be the primary task for you, as the homeowner. Basically, contact your insurance company and notify them of the damage. This could mean calling your insurance agent or filing the claim over the web.

Won’t an insurance claim raise my homeowners insurance costs?

If you live in an area struck by damaging hailstorms, some of your neighbors have been using their insurance to repair the damage, so the influence of the storm on insurance is already there. Don’t get stuck with an increase and not the help.

I have so many windows and doors. Isn’t that a lot of paperwork?

Pella Windows and Doors will take comprehensive measurements of each window and make a determination as to what repair method is needed—or if a full window replacement is unavoidable.

We will create a detailed quote for you and will even submit it to your insurance company for you.

We strive to be open and honest with the homeowner. Our pact with you is that we never give information to the insurance company that we do not communicate to you. It is your home, so we work for you.

What if an insurance adjuster has already been to my house for hail damage?

When storms occur, a huge demand for urgent repairs to roofs and siding appears. Having an additional adjuster take a closer look at the damage to your windows and doors can be helpful. The insurance company will communicate with the homeowner and Pella Windows and Doors to schedule an adjuster to come to the home and confirm the damage. We can meet with you and the adjuster to clarify the damage and the repair steps. Every now and then, an adjuster will oppose parts of the claim and claims will be amended. If this happens, we will work on your behalf to ensure the best possible outcome for the homeowner.

How long will it take?

At this point the difficult work is complete, but patience is important. The claim will get processed through the insurer’s payment system, but this can be a lengthy process of waiting, taking from a couple of days to a few weeks or more.

Step 3: Getting the work done!

Your claim was approved and you’re looking forward to damage-free windows and doors! The check may be addressed to just the homeowner, or it may be made out to the homeowner and the mortgage company. If the mortgage company is included on the check, the check will have to be passed to the lender, who will probably have a few more forms. We can help with those.

How soon can the repairs start?

When the payee is clear, you will again be required to have patience as forms and procedures are handled. Generally after about seven to ten days, the first payment will show up, which can be about 50 to 60 percent of the total payment. This is enough to use as a deposit, which allows Pella Windows and Doors to get to work repairing or replacing the hail damage to your windows or doors.

The final payment usually won’t be sent until we give the final invoice. This check is required to be sent to your lender company, but it will possibly take less time to process than the first check.

Our large and experienced team of verifiers and installers can arrange a time to do the work that best fits your available time.
